What not to pull out of your garden

16 March 2026

The word weed in the gardening world is so vague as to be meaningless. Homeowners tell us to remove the weeds, not realising that – amongst those weeds – there are some wonderful treasures in their garden.

One simple example is this, in this flower bed.

It is far from the best photo I have taken. It is a screenshot from a video clip of a garden tidy up done recently. Referring to the roundish leaves, do you know what this plant is?

We did not remove it as it is a good groundcover. The homeowner then removed the entire carpet, exposing the area to being taken over by the lawn nearby. The groundcover is actually a beloved, easy to maintain ornamental named dichondra. You can easily buy it in many nurseries in New Zealand. See this link

Here is a popular use of dichondra “silver falls”. It flows beautifully over retaining walls:

Why on earth would someone think they are improving their garden by removing it?

Unless you really don’t like the way it fills areas in your garden, dichondra is a keeper!

Groundcovers are wonderful spreading or clumping plants to fill areas in your garden. There are many that are attractive and make your garden a happy place. Call us to prettify your garden areas, add value to your home or get a house ready for the market and for stunning photos.
